Pin me baby one more time!
Jan 1, 2013. I was in Florida on a family vacation. I was a full time musician and I was getting married. This was before I started my online business and I was heavily in debt. I didn’t have the courage before this moment to add all my debt into one heaping amount. In my mind it was $7k in student loans and $19K in credit lines and $8K on credit card.
But that night I was courageous. I added it up to $34,000.
My heart beat so fast.
I couldn’t sleep for a week.
I was so anxious.
All I could think was “I’m f’ed”.
That was the start of my journey about learning about my relationship with money.
Through reading blogs and books I realized I didn’t charge anything because I didn’t think I was worth anything.
This made me realize that I had some big issues around money.
I didn’t think I could be a good person and make a lot of money.
Beyond that, I didn’t think my family would still love me if I was wealthy.
I thought, if I wanted to make a lot of money I had to either do what I didn’t want to do or work very very very very very hard.
Who would want be debt free and financially comfortable with those beliefs?
By working on my inner game and my relationship with money (and starting an online business) I was able to pay my debt off in 6 months.
This didn’t mean that I had to work any harder.
I was just as nice to people.
My family still loved me.
This is a VERY long intro into 10 ways to earn more money while working less and being more of service, however, I wanted to share with you that this list is based on my own long journey.
It didn’t stop with just paying off my debt by the way, for awhile I plateaued at zero because just beyond debt free felt scary. It took me awhile to start making profit.
Here’s what I believe, if you you want to make this world a better place, you need to find ways to earn more money.
Charge for stuff you’re already doing for free.
If you’re not making enough, what are you doing for free? Got scope creep? Perhaps you need to be charging for all those additional requests those clients are asking for.
For myself, I was managing my band and I hadn’t ever charged a percentage (which is standard in the industry). As a result, my commission fee in the following 3 months was $4000 and that came in mighty handy for reducing my debt load.
So, when you do this, you can work less because you don’t have to pick up other jobs that you don’t even enjoy.
Raise your prices.
Yep. Raise ‘em baby. Think they’re too high already? You’re probably wrong.
If you think .78 for a woman to $1 for a man is only happening in the workplace you are dreaming. We carry those beliefs and ideas within us as entrepreneurs.
You realize there are people who pay $1000 for a steak right? They could get it for $13 at the butcher, but they pay $1000.
When I ask for more money, yes, I am scared. Yes, I wonder “who am I to ask this much” but I do and they pay.
Obviously, it’s more than just raising your prices – you get to be of greater service when you charge more. I ensure my clients have a high end experience to go with my high prices. It allows me to take care of them in ways I never could when I charged lower prices. I want to go the extra mile and I have the cushion with which to go that extra mile.
Hire a VA.
Yep. Get help. One of the main ways to earn more money is when your time isn’t being used up on $10 projects like posting on Instagram.
You can also work less.
Take on a business partner.
This is my favourite and exactly what I am doing now.
I recently partnered with Lindsey Bast to help me serve more clients. For years people have been begging me to do take care of their FB advertising. I always said no because I didn’t think I was the best suited and I wanted to work LESS not more.
Here’s where Lindsey comes in. She loves analytics and client management. I love the marketing and the business administration.
Together, we can serve a whole lot more clients (aka we can be of service while working less). Win Win!
Turn a service into a product.
Passive income baby. It’s the way of the future. Is there a way to automate or create a product that will serve some of the needs of your clients? There’s pretty much a million ways to do this including worksheets, online courses, audio books, ebooks and membership sites.
There is only one of you and if you need to make a greater impact you need to start thinking about how to use your talents to reach greater and greater people.
Move from 1-1 to 1-many.
Along with passive products, you could create group offerings. Your customers still get the live, one-to-one touch but it’s delivered in a group setting, think live: workshop and group coaching programs.
Not only are you impacting more people in this way, you are also connecting your audience and creating community for them. Adult learners learn differently then children, what you teach and the solutions you provide are amplified by having adults work and learn together in a group environment.
Reach out to previous clients.
Your previous happy customers are your best salespeople. You need their referrals, testimonials and repeat business. If you serve online business owners with a passive product, your customers could also be your affiliates.
It’s harder to gain a new customer than gaining repeat business from the same customer. One way for you to be of greater service and to earn more money is to brainstorm how you can be there for the life of your customer.
Reach out to your previous customers, let them know what you’re doing and directly ask them for referrals and testimonials. Ask them if there is anything you can do now to help them in their business.
Write blogs and social media posts that directly promote your work.
The blogs and social media posts you have for your business should be making a case for why they should buy from you. You’d be surprised how many people forget to promote themselves. Living in the shadows doesn’t serve and it doesn’t pay so let your light shine.
Add CTA’s to your blog posts and your newsletter asking ppl to work with you.
Do people know they can buy from you? Do they have to go looking for that info or is it obvious? I see lots of coaches and freelancers who hide their products and services. Being humble doesn’t help your customers. Along with your work with me page, you should have CTA (call to action) at the bottom of your blog posts selling the appropriate product or service you sell AND having it in your newsletters.
Become an affiliate.
Your customers may have needs that you can’t help. Perhaps you don’t want to teach them how to do SEO for themselves. A potential solution you can provide is a recommendation that serves both you and the client. If they purchase what you’ve recommended you get a commission off the sale.
I like being really clear with my customers that I get an affiliate commission and they are always very pleased to purchase through that affiliate link because they want to help my business as well.
That’s 10 ways to earn more money while working less and being of service, do you have a few more for me?
